NCS Game Synopsis
«©NCSX» In the early minutes of Biohazard, it is July 24, 1998 and Alpha Team is on a mission to locate Bravo Team which was investigating a series of strange murders. While flying over Raccoon Forest, they spot a derelict helicopter and descend for a closer look. Shortly after landing however, things take a turn for the worse when Alpha Team is attacked by a pack of voracious mutts. Chris Redfield is about to get whacked out by a rampaging mongrel when Wesker blasts it out of the air. The remaining members of the team proceed to race towards a mansion situated in the forest with dogs in hot pursuit. Once inside, three S.T.A.R.S. operatives remain and they're not really sure where Barry is.

The original Biohazard was released on the Playstation back in 1996 and the game engendered an entire industry of horror games. Who knew rotting zombies would be so popular? The enduring franchise has also branched off into movies and the fifth sequel ships in a few months. Until then however, Capcom trots Biohazard out once again with a Wii remake. The game is based on the Gamecube version but with Nunchuk and Wii Remote functionality added to the game engine. Everything else is the same including the CG cinematic introductory sequence.

NCS Game Notes
» Shortly after the game boots up, a short sequence plays where a zombie slowly rises from a table. A gunshot is heard and the zombie lies back down again.

» The selections on the title screen are:

- LOAD GAME
- NEW GAME
- OPTION

» The options are in English and they are:

- Brightness Adjust
- Controller Setup
- Audio Setup
- Game Reset
- Exit

» The game may be played with a combination of the Nunchuk and Wii Remote, the Classic Controller, Gamecube Joypad, or the Wii Remote alone which is held horizontally.

» Either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine may be chosen as your onscreen hero.

» Upon starting the game, a cinematic intro plays which is an improved version of the Playstation original where a helicopter is flying over Raccoon Forest and the Alpha Team crew is searching for Bravo Team when they spot their abandoned helicopter. The voice over is in English like the original but the subtitles are in Japanese. Once on the ground, Alpha Team is scoping out the area when a bunch of zombie dogs chomp up one of their members. Chris Redield and Jill are shown running from the dogs when Wesker shoots one of them down and they all head for the mansion in the distance with dogs hot on their heels.

» Inside the mansion, only three STARS members remain and they're not sure where Barry is. If you play the game as Jill, it's Chris who's missing. When Jill goes to investigate a gun shot, the cinema shows Barry accompanying her and the two enter a room with guns drawn. Once control is handed over to the player however, Jill is by herself and Barry is nowhere to be seen although he is there during the cinematic sequence in front of the fireplace. Barry will stay at the fireplace while Jill goes off to investigate further. After returning from the initial zombie encounter, Barry will shoot down the zombie and after that sequence, Barry can be seen in the actual game accompanying Jill as backup support.

» If you play Chris, he's only equipped with a knife at the outset of the game but Jill has a gun.

» The voices in the game itself are in English but the subtitles are only in Japanese.

» The control scheme with the Nunchuk and Wii Remote is awkward. To move foward, you must always push up on the analog nub while pushing down will make the hero walk backwards. Pushing left or right makes the hero rotate in place. We would have preferred a literal interpretation of the analog control where pushing in any direction will make the hero move in that direction. Instead of adapting the controls in the remake to take advantage of the Wii's controllers, Capcom decided to hew to an antiquated control scheme that worked okay on the Playstation about 12 years ago but there's no reason for it to be used now. As it is, the movement in the game is lumbering, clumsy, and totally inexcusable. Maybe Capcom did it on purpose so they can release another remake a few years down the line with improved and sensible Nunchuk+Remote controls.

» Due to the poor controls, we decided to let Chris Redfield die a premature death at the hands of the "eating zombie" at the beginning of the game. When Chris dies, he falls down while a pool of blood expands around his prone body. The words, "You Are Dead" appear in red and it's al over.

» We let the game run after Chris' death and a series of captured game sequences will play in demo mode. There's about 6 different sequences including one where Jill kills a huge snake in the library. Once they've all played, they'll repeat ad infinitum.

» A total of 8 save slots are available.

Region Lock-out
Please note Japanese Wii games will not boot on USA or European Wii consoles due to the inherent region-lockout on Japanese Wii game discs. A Freeloader (and a Wii with 3.2U firmware) is required to play Japanese Wii games.
