«©NCSX» Centuries before the present day in Breath of Fire III, a brood of dragons was killed off in a great war. When dragons die, their bodies turn into a material known as chrysm. The day of dragons has seemingly passed until a group of miners accidentally revive a whelp named Ryu encased in chrysm. With a single stroke, a fledgling dragon is brought back into the world.

As the game begins, Rei is hunting a boar when a ruckus nearby sends the animal scurrying away. Investigating the din, Rei watches Ryu kill two beasts that have cornered him. Unsure of Ryu's living arrangements, Rei takes him home and inducts the stoic little warrior in his gang which consists of Teepo, himself, and now Ryu. After a sequence of events, Ryu and friends go off on an adventure to discover why the dragons were destroyed.

Breath of Fire III on the PSP is a port of the Playstation original with graphics, sound, and music intact. As in the original, the Dragon System is present where dragon genes such as flame, frost, and shadow are mixed together to engender new dragon forms. Ryu may transform into a Behemoth by using the Miracle Gene but elemental flavorings may also be applied while the Trygon form is created by combining flame, frost, and thunder. Dragon forms eat up a lot of AP which may force conservative gamers to use them sparingly during encounters.

Fishing Fun
The PSP version of Breath of Fire 3 includes an expanded fishing game which is playable as a separate game where rods, lures, and objectives are featured. The fishing game may also be transmitted to PSPs in the local area so others may enjoy the fishing action. During the game proper, fishing allows Ryu to capture fish which may be used for healing or for barter in Manillo's Shop for weapons, special lures, and armor. Six types of fishing rods are available in the game which differ in strength and capability. For example, the basic wooden rod snaps in two with little effort while the angling rod features both range and a high success rate in pulling fish from their waters. Bait is also required to attract fish and Ryu will use worms, various frogs, and exotic lures that are only found in Manillo's shop.

Mini Game #2
The Fairy Village mini-game is an enjoyable diversion where Ryu manages a small team of fairies to expand their small village into a bustling fairy town. As the population of the village grows, more fairly labor may be directed to hunting duties, clearing forest, and building.
