NCS Product Synopsis
Update: September 21, 2006
«©NCSX» Four developers - Atlus, Aruze, Red Entertainment, and Idea Factory - pool their resources together and share 36 of their branded characters in a tactical strategy game which features faces from many franchises. The somber Beyond the Grave and Rocketbilly Red Cadillac appear along with Alice, Karin, and Yuri as main characters who share the stage with a bustling cast roster. Characters featured in Chaos Wars hail from Gun Grave, Shinsengumi Gunrouden, Gakuen Toshi Vara Noir, Blazing Souls, Generation of Chaos, Growlanser, Shadow Hearts, and Shinki Gensou Spectral Souls.

Chaos Wars is played in familiar tactical strategic fashion where players marshal a party of adventurers and battle foes by choosing attacks and magic from a menu of options. At the outset of the game, the party of two tackles a couple of goldfish-like creatures that counter with weak blows. The game play follows the same design specifics of Idea Factory's Spectral Souls franchise and might be mistaken for a game from the series were it not for the large assortment of new characters. The movement phases in Chaos Wars use a free roaming system where a circular perimeter decides the range of movement. Once a target area is selected, the hero rambles over and stands pat as he waits for the next command.

NCS Game Notes
» In the intro to the game, three heroes in silhouette stand still amidst a fiery background before the Atlus X Aruze X Red Entertanment X Idea Factory logo text pops. It's a collaborative effort by the four companies. As the intro kicks off, the main characters from the game are introduced in a slow moving cinematic intro. Before the intro ends, images of various locales in the game and manga panels are shown.

» Start a New Game and a voiceover reads the dialogue on screen which sets up the background storyline and world of Chaos Wars.

» All of the dialogue in the game is voiced by actors. To skip the dialogue and fast forward through it, press the TRIANGLE button once and it'll pass by in speedy motion.

» The first battle takes place in a floating battlefield with a wall's worth of books in the background. The enemies consist of two goldfish-like creatures who travel on land. To select the heroine, move the pointer with the D-pad or L-analog over the gal and press the "O" button. Click on the first option (move) and a red perimeter pops up on screen which shows her movement limitation. A comrade will join her by teleporting into the battlefield and after a short conversation, the goldfish home in for the attack.

» The enemies do about 4 damage each and the attacks are shown in quick animated sequences. After their turn is over, its time to counterattack. To perform a healing spell, select the second option and a half-circle grid appears. Target the character in need of HP and he'll be healed for 18 HP points worth. To attack the enemies, press the "O-Button" over him and his options appear. Select the 2/3 option and then choose an attack option from two possible choices. The attack commands are depicted with a sword next to them while the spells have a bluish orb next to them. In the attack sequence, a cylindrical grid appears as the targeting cursor. Place it over a fish and it's possible to strike out.

» After defeating the two goldfish, the party levels up. After the battle is won, the game prompts player to save data to memory card.

» When attacking a target, their HP bar is shown on the bottom of the screen and it loses HP after the attack connects.

» To center the pointer on the hero or heroine, press the X button at any time and it teleports right over him/her.

» After the battle, the game ranks your performance and awards a letter grade. Just like high school.

» Some of the in-game music has a techno beat quality to it.

From the Publisher
First year student of the private Tsukioka School, Kusaka Hyoma, heard from his grandfather the legend of “when the gate to the alternative world opens, an incredible green glow can be seen, and the ancestors of the Kusaka family will step on this land.” Although he did not believe in this, he was surrounded by unexplainable light when exploring the hill behind the school and found a cave. Thus, the prologue to an unknown adventure begins.

Famous characters from many companies battle together
This game gathers many classic characters from game titles produced by several game companies, including the main characters of Aruze’s Shadow Hearts II, Atlus’s Growlanser series, Red Entertainment’s Gungrave and Shinsengumi Gunrawden, Idea Factory’s Spectral Force, Blazing Souls and Generation of Chaos series. All of them will retain their very own special skills, and the game system incorporates the essence of the individual games, for a dreamlike performance that has not been seen before
