NCS Product Synopsis
Update: July 27, 2006
«©NCSX» In the first two Chikyuu Boueigun games released in 2003 and 2005, players took up the gun and blasted monstrous insects as a member of the Earth Defense Force. For the third game in the series, developer Sandlot goes back to the beginnings of the conflict and presents the entire war in a tactical strategy game. Players take control of the entire EDF and marshal troops and heavy tanks against the alien invaders and their mutated insect army.

Following the events and timeline of the original games, the battle starts in Japan but eventually moves to Europe as the EDF faces off against the enemy. Nearly 300 types of weapons may be used in the game and the soldiers start off with laser blasters, grenades, and conventional guns. In later levels, more exotic weaponry may be used to decimate the opposition. The game features all 50 stages that were presented in the Chikyuu games albeit in tactical style in the normal mode of the game. A Free Mode allows the player to fight on the side of the alien invaders where giant ants and tarantulas are sent into conflict against EDF troops. Squads of troops may be upgraded to higher levels of performance to create a unique force with special weapons and abilities. Battles take place in populated towns, mountains, forests, and even subterranean areas which affect the strategic considerations that must be made when attacking and defending against the opposing force.

NCS Game Notes & Spoilers
» On the title screen, a male and a female soldier stand in front of an image of Earth while ominous marching music thumps off in the background. It sounds like a dirge of war.

» Press START and a rolling image of the continents slowly scroll across the screen while spooky music whistles. Hexagon shapes scroll within the landmasses. On the lower left portion of the screen, the text reads, "Earth Defense Forces | OS ver.6.9.1 | System type h-EX06 | overlay 2D mode"

» Start a new game and the scrolling text sets the background for the first alien invasion and how alien invaders returned to finish the job in the second Chikyuu Bouiegun game.

» Before each level, players select which units to bring into the mission by choosing them from a roster menu. There are male soldiers, female soldiers and vehicles to use. The player starts with 4000 credits which is enough to buy every unit presented on the screen. Once the military units are selected, press the START button to enter the mission.

» A map appears and a voice over explains the situation. Use the d-pad or L-analog to move the cursor around. Highlight the blue building on the lower-right corner of the screen with the yellow insignia on top and press the "O-button" to go inside. Your troops are located herein. Select 5 units to put into your first squad. End your turn and watch as the ants start entering the map en masse from the north. Once the invaders have moved, it's time to mobilize your units out individually. Highlight the HQ and then press O-button to select each unit to move out. Every unit's range is denoted by the hexagonal grid that appears once movement phase is activated. Once all of the units are moved out, highlight the HQ again and then select the next five units for deployment in the next phase.

» To attack an enemy, walk right up to it and press "O" on the first menu option that appears. A targeting scope will appear next but if the target is the only one near you, it will automatically lock onto that spider or creature. An animation will be shown where a soldier or military unit runs up and shoots at the enemy. If it's a foot soldier vs spider, the firepower won't be enough to kill it but the bullet will wound the spider for the next attacker.

» Soldiers armed with bazookas can only attack long-range and not creatures contiguous to them. When a bazooka is shot at a wounded spider, it'll connect and the spider is shown flipping over backwards onto its back. Dead.

» Damage on the monster gauge is shown before the full screen animation is played. Ants will scream when they're hit with buckshot. When ants die, they jump up and flip over with legs crumpled together.

» As a war takes place, military marching music plays with thumping drums and an urgency about it.

» In the Now Loading screen, an ant scrambles across a highway.

» A soldier throwing a grenade is usually victorious against an insect by lobbing a single bomb.

» In the first level, the ants will keep coming until you drain their ships of energy by placing a soldier unit over their ship and sapping it. Once all of their ships are sapped, the mission is cleared and the next mission begins. To sap energy, walk a military soldier over to an alien ship and then press the "O-button" on the first menu option that appears.

» To denote which units have already had a turn on the map, an "E" appears on their icons. In later mission where the battlefield is littered with troops, the "E" is a quick way to see which troops have already attacked.

» A human girl trooper who glides around on a booster pack shoots a laser cannon that destroys an ant with one shot.

» An annoyance is that every time you attack, you have to press the button again after the damage gauge on the enemy is shown.

» To skip the battle animations, press the "O-button" for faster action and movement phases.

» When gunfire hits an insect invader, the Dual Shock vibration rumbles.

» Spiders can attack by spraying web from it's bottom. When one of your tanks is attacked, it's shown smoking from the back as it wheels backwards from the force of the blow. It's counterattack is automatic and usually destroys any insect attacker with a single shot.
