«©NCSX» Exercise guru Hiromichi Sato has carved a nifty niche for himself in Japan. Besides bearing an uncanny resemblance to Shigeru Miyamoto, Hiromichi writes books, sells DVDs, releases audio programs on CD, and stars on television in his bid to keep everyone in Nihon fit and healthy. Hiromichi conquers another platform with the NDS release of his exercise regimen which gets parents and children together to do a little living room gymnastics and aerobics.

The idea is to view the short instructional video of an exercise on the Nintendo DS and then recreate it in real life. For example, if you witness a stepping exercise that uses both legs and feet, mimic the motions to the best of your ability and you'll be working your body, Hiromichi-san style.

NCS Product Notes

» The touch screen serves as the navigation console and the top screen displays the various exercises and video sequences. The quality of the video is clear and conveys each exercise in a short and well-edited manner.

» One of the exercises is known as "Airplane" where the father lies down on the ground and then raises his knees. He then places his child on top of his knees and then extends them out and in to simulate air travel. Sort of. Another exercise would be more fitting for circus performers where the parent places his child on his knees and then lifts his legs upwards and somersaults the child over and onto the ground behind the parent's head. If not performed correctly, we think there could be the chance for an accident but maybe that's just our liability-minded perspective on consumer products.

» After viewing each exercise, a gashapon machine appears. Use the stylus to rotate the knob to receive a gashapon gift (jigsaw puzzle piece).

» NCS viewed most of the videos in
Hiromichi Onisan no Oyako Taisou Naviand we think they're interesting and perhaps innovative ways for parents to interact with their toddlers. The exercises are physical and some require a good amount of arm and leg strength on the part of the parent. In one exercise, Hiromichi lifts a child up into the air with one arm that's fully extended. We question the suitability of some of the activities such as the somersault mentioned earlier but overall, the product will give parents ideas for exercising with their children. Although there's no written English to be found in the software, the icon-based menus are easy to navigate and the videos explain themselves. Hiromichi does say, "Okay!" whenever you select an activity to view.
