«©NCSX» A purple vortex in the sky is the last thing the heroes of Sangoku Musou and Sengoku Musou witness before being transported into an epic battle royale. A scaly lord named Orochi has split the fabric of time and space which accidentally brings the heroes together and ultimately lays the foundation that seals its doom. Before that happens however, players choose a team from four clans that are selectable at the outset of the game and clash through military campaigns where entire armies are slaughtered.

Musou Orochi represents the first time that warriors from both of Koei's popular Musou series have clashed and collaborated. The commingling of Japanese and Chinese generals + heroes makes for interesting scenarios and sets up toothsome "What If" scenarios.

Two main game modes are featured: STORY MODE and FREE MODE. The latter allows players to select stages while the former gives players control of three heroes and their armies. Once the game starts, players maneuver a hero that rushes into war against other armies with the ultimate goal of defeating Orochi. To switch from hero to hero, tap the L1 or L2 triggers and the swaps are performed on the fly in fluid fashion. The action runs fast and the enemy forces are fairly aggressive in their attacks.

NCS Game Notes
» In the intro to the game, two eyes appear in the darkness before they fade away into a snake head. Two ships swirl in the water and their lords are mounted on the sterns and facing off. The scene shifts to a contingent attacking another army and invading their attendant castle. Heroes jump downwards into a crowd and start swinging. Back to the water scene, the two heroes' ships clash and they fight. Back to the battlefield for some more fighting action and the scene shifts back to the ship one more time before the Musou Orochi logo pops.

» Press START and the following selections appear

STORY MODE
FREE MODE
OPTION
GALLERY

The OPTION menu allows for setting the controller configuration, setting sound volumes, positioning the screen, viewing characters, saving/loading data.

The GALLERY contains character artwork, images of weapons, and 20 assorted cinemas from earlier games in the Musou series. Some of the data is viewable but others must be unlocked. In the cinema section, fourteen movies may be viewed but six are locked. The MobileJOY option is also located under the Gallery section.

» In the STORY MODE, select one of five kingdoms which are represented by three warriors and then go into battle. Stages are not selectable and cinemas precede each level to set up the storyline of the game.

» The action is fast paced. There's a portly warrior who carries a lance/cannon which he swings to attack but after a few swings, it automatically switches into firing mode where a cannonball is shot at enemies. If you power him up, he will eventually be able to shoot three cannonballs in sequence after every few swings which is very useful to blow back multiple enemy troops and their bosses.

» In the FREE MODE, only nine characters are available at the outset from 7 houses but the total character roster features an additional 66 characters for a total of 75 warriors in all. The 66 characters must be unlocked before they're usable. In Free Mode, you select three characters and then choose which stages to fight upon. Before each battle, a 3D isometric view of the stage is shown and a short camera skim of the area is shown before your hero appears.

» You can switch between any of your three characters on the fly by pressing the L2 or R2 triggers. Two fellow warriors may also join you and they fight on their own volition and AI.

» When a hero is knocked down, enemies smell blood and rush in for the kill by attacking and slicing like blood thirsty ingrates. We want this type of aggression in our Musou games.

» Enemies generally coordinate their attacks and will slice in unison if your hero is wounded.

» When you defeat a group of enemy soldiers, the remaining few will run away from your bloodlust.

» A frenetic chirpy soundtrack plays during the game with a driving techno beat coupled with pan flute.
