NCS Product Synopsis

«©NCSX» The first The Survival Game
(Simple 2000 Series Vol. 56) was met with scorn and ridicule... which is par for the course in the world of dodgy Simple 2000 software. The developers went back to the drawing board to tweak the game engine and perhaps improve it a tad. Three years later, D3 Publisher releases the sequel to the Survival Game and we're saddened to report that the scorn and ridicule continues.

Players take on the role of an air gun assailant who assembles a team and then invades the Tokyo Marui BB Sports Field to take on other teams of air gun agents. At the outset of the main game, five heroes are selected and then two are chosen to go into the battlefield. The action runs at a clumsy pace although the controls aren't bad. The spray from the airsoft guns is somewhat accurate and the visuals are pedestrian but get the job done. Where the game falls flat on its face is the poor quality of the enemy AI. There were times when members of the computer-controlled team stood facing a wall instead of actively roaming the field hunting for targets. Hunting and shooting is sort of the point of the war games that The Survival Game attempts to simulate. Despite its failings, NCS still invested about an hour in the game. We're suckers for the Simple 2000 Series....

» The Controls in the game are as follows:

L-Analog / Movement
R-Analog / Camera Swivel
L2-Trigger / Kneel

X-Button / Reload
TRIANGLE / Overhead map

» In the Survival Game Mode, players choose two active characters from the roster of five and then invade the Tokyo Marui BB Sports Field where the two duos face off against each other.

» The catalog contains videos narrated by Huruya Tetsu which check out some very realistic looking air guns that would probably be illegal in the United States. Some guns have recoil capability known as electric blowback pistols. A Japanese bloke in a suit is shown loading the guns with ammo, aiming it, and then shooting at a paper target. In each segment, the camera slowly rolls over the gun while romantic music plays in the background. It's cheesy, somewhat silly, and totally cornball. Video sequences are also shown with blokes shooting the guns at each other in a real life "Survival" game. The weapons in the Catalog Mode include the M14 Socom, H&K MP7A1, Scorpion Vz.61, and the Sig Sauer P226 Rail (Chrome Stainless), and others. There's a video feature on the Tokyo Marui BB Sports Field which shows the facility from the outside and then goes inside to check out the arena where players can engage in skirmishes with air guns.

» When you hit an opponent, he'll raise up his arms and give up. The Quick Game Mode features 3-on-3 challenges where you and two COM-controlled comrades go up against another trio of airgun-toting players. If you hit all three enemies, you'll earn 21,000 points for each member of your team that's unscathed.

» From our play-through this morning, the enemy AI is pretty stupid. There were times when we were roving around on full alert and we found enemies facing the wall instead of hunting for our team. In later levels, they weren't any more aggressive but maybe we have to play further...

» Players can visit the Marui Gun Shop or the Phantom (World's Army Navy Surplus Connection) Equipment Shop to pick up guns and gear.

» The first "The Survival Game" featured 7 battlefield maps to play upon. The sequel features 9 maps including a subway platform as well as the Tokyo Marui indoor course.
