«©NCSX» The Sonic crew (Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, Rouge, Tails and more) romp and battle in a fighting free-for-all where the furry animals pick attack skills and use them in scrolling arenas. Fought on an isometric field, four friends linked by cable may participate in frenetic competitions. Only one cartridge is required for multi-player gaming. Successful combatants earn points for adding attacks and new skills to improve their level of game.
In a sampling of the battle mode this morning, NCS chose Shadow and ran around on a smoothly scrolling playfield as Tails and Knuckles chased and targeted our hero for destruction. A number of platforms divide the first arena into a sort of rudimentary maze with areas to hide behind when the need calls. The camera eases along nicely as the fighters rush around the screen with no jittery movements or stutter-step animation. Fluid. The "A" button forces Shadow to jump and the "B" button sets off an attack. Jumping up and then attacking pulls off a diving attack while double-tapping in any direction ignites a furious dash move. Two slaps of the "A" button will allow most fighters to bound across nearly a third of the screen to dash away from danger or to join a heated battle with the quickness.
