NCS Product Synopsis
Update: October 30, 2008
«©NCSX» It's been 11 years since the last Thunderforce game was released on a home console. That was July of 1997 when Technosoft debuted Thunderforce V: Perfect System on the venerable Sega Saturn. Adjunct: When NCS first got a hold of Thunderforce II on the Sega Megadrive some 20 years ago, we thought the voices were horrible but the gameplay was lovely. We even enjoyed the overhead shooting levels.

Sega takes over production of the latest Thunderforce game which is directed by Tetsu Okano whose previous credits include Gunstar Super Heroes and Astro Boy. TFVI's graphics remind us of the visual purity that was Gradius V. The first level of the game takes place in a ruined space colony that's been overrun by vegetation and guarded by a fire-breathing Gargoyle while the second level takes players planet-side onto a fiery world covered by an ocean of lava. The third stage plunges gamers into a blue world where the attack begins in the sky but the fracas eventually descends into the ocean. Multiple weapons may be used including classics such as the Hunter Shot, Twin Shot, and Wave. One new weapon called "Free Range" is reminiscent of Soukyugurentai where a geometric web serves as a targeting arc where anything within the web is decimated by lasers.

NCS Game Notes
» The cinematic introduction to the game depicts an invasion of Earth from ships that warp into view above the planet. If you watch long enough, Sega pays homage to earlier games in the Thunderforce series with inset captures of those games.

» Press START on the title screen and the following options pop up:

Game Start - Begin a new game and choose the order of the first three stages (Jungle, Flame, and Ocean)
Ranking - View high scores - upon starting the game, they're prefilled with the name "Styx"
Game Setting - Choose difficulty, player stock, and revert to default
Button Setting - Configure controller and toggle Dual Shock vibration
Sound Setting - Select Stereo/Mono and adjust BGM and SE volume levels
Save/Load - Store or Restore data to memory card

» The default controller settings are as follows:

Circle: Over Weapon
Cross: Shot
Triangle: Speed Up
Square: Weapon Up
L1-Trigger: Speed Up
L2-Trigger: Speed Down
R1-Trigger: Weapon Up
R2-Trigger: Weapon Down

Either the d-pad or analog thumbstick may be used to control the fighter

» The first three bosses in the game are:

• First level end boss: Gargoyle Perfect - a fire breathing monstrosity that's preceded by a junior Gargoyle
• Second level end boss: Flame Maiden - a horned insect with wings who jumps around to make fireballs rise up from the lava
• Third level end boss: Cherub Purple - a massive starfish that creates a vortes that makes the ship tough to control

» Five weapon systems are available for the choosing at any time and may be toggled on the fly so that the Hunter, Wave, Twin Shot, etc may be used to suit the occasion.

» When enemy forces are destroyed, they'll release slivers of energy that are automatically collected by the player's ship if they're close enough. The energy fills up the Over-Weapon gauge which is a powerful offensive blast.

» Thunderforce VI has proven to be one of NCS' best selling imports this year. We had to increase our order quantity multiple times in the past few months to meet demand. If sales in Japan are good, Sega is apt to produce more quality shooters to satisfy the needs of shmup fans the world over.
