«©NCSX» Over ten years ago, Asmik Ace released Tokyo Majin Gakuen Ken Kaze Tobari on the original Playstation. The game told the story of a siege on Tokyo where undead beings and demons conspired to expand their sphere of influence. To combat the supernatural threat, a group of gifted students from Magami High School venture out every night to suppress the menace and get to the bottom of why Tokyo has been targeted.

Japanese publisher Marvelous remakes the Tokyo Majin game for the Nintendo DS and throws in a bevy of graphical updates and CG upgrades. The story is divided into 24 chapters where the main characters interact and stalk their adversaries. Early preorders will include a pair of bonus Tokyo Majin Gakuen chopsticks that were given out in 30% ratio.

NCS Game Notes
» Year: 1997.
Tokyo Majin Gakuen begins on a dark and stormy night where three ruffians are about to harass a lone stranger. Little do they know that he's armed, skillful, and not someone to be trifled with. The introductory sequence is told through static screens, sound effects, background music, and pacing that is controlled by your prompted pressing of the R-trigger on the NDS.

» Year: 1998. The din of a group of students blares through the speakers and a view of a standard classroom appears on the top NDS screen. A green chalkboard spans the front of the room and the backs of seats and tables may be seen. The assembly bell rings and a teacher appears in front of the class. She says, "Good Morning Everybody" and the class chimes back "Good Morning Miss Maria."

» Soon afterwards, you're prompted to enter your name in Katakana, Hiragana, or in English. We named the protagonist, "Mr. Odd." Sadly, there weren't any extra spaces to expand the moniker to "Mr. Oddity." You'll also be prompted for your birthday and blood type.

» Two female students approach the protagonist and begin a spirited conversation before running off. A weapon-wielding student appears afterwards as well to introduce himself before class starts once again.

»
Tokyo Majin Gakuen is a mix of lengthy interactive sequences with other characters in the game and conventional S-RPG battles where a team of students battle undead and other undesirables in isometric-viewed action. The introductory sequence is rather lengthy with only a small amount of input required as the game sets up the background and current situation. From the moment you start the game and go through the entire intro, roughly 50 minutes will have passed. You'll get to save your progress to one of four slots after the introduction.

» A small amount of voice acting is featured in the game which is limited to "Konnichiwa" and "Ja Ne" when supporting characters greet and say goodbye to the protagonist.

» The first battle is against five toughs from the school. The two party members are on the southwest corner of the screen while their adversaries are arrayed to the northeast. To move a fighter, press the "A" button to bring up the battle menu and highlight the first option and press "A" again. The available movement area will light up. Sidle up next to a thug, orient the character to face him, and press "A" to bring up the menu once again. To attack, press "A" on the first option and the attack range will light up with red or blue squares. The first blow will send the thug reeling and is enough to send him on his way. You'll win a burger for your troubles.

» To end your turn, highlight an empty area on the map and press the "A" button to bring up a second menu. Next, highlight the second option on the menu and the thugs will get a chance to retaliate.

» Attacks are shown in short animated sequences where punches, kicks, sword slashes, and other melee movements are depicted.

» After winning a battle, the heroes will wave their arms and rejoice. Soon after the battle, an introductory sequence will play which is the same sequence that's played after the game is loaded up. You can skip it by pressing the "A" button.
