«©NCSX» In 1997, Sony wowed the Playstation RPG masses with Wild Arms which featured an involving storyline, affable characters and slick battle techniques. While the game itself was great, the graphics were...less so. Sony revisits the original Wild Arms with a remake which redoes the entire game with shiny graphical sheen and updated game play.

In addition to the three original characters - Cecila the princess, Jack the swordsman and Rudy the gunslinger, players may also recruit Calamity Jane Maxwell, Magdalen Harts and Professor Emma Hetfield for a party of six. During the game, trios of characters may be split into two cadres - one which battles foes and the second which rests and rebuilds life force if they are injured. World exploration takes place in realtime 3-D and encounters are shown in nicely rendered action sequences where monsters and heroes face off in turn-based fashion.

Other enhancements over the original Wild Arms include completely redrawn graphics by artist Wakako Ooba, a new soundtrack from Michiko Naruke and character voices performed by professional voice actors.

* Agetec handled the USA conversion of WAACF. Original game by Mediavision.

* Before starting the game, players may set the options including controller vibration, sound, toggle compass on/off, set battle speed, and toggle on/off the screen saver.

* A piano plays in the intro and the camera pans across white flowers on a field as petals float upwards. A girl is in the field of flowers, saying that the flowers talk to her and have much to say. There is a group of people waiting for something or someone and a guy in a captain's outfit rushes in and a blonde girl runs also... past him to greet three more people who are headed towards the group. The intro ends with the words "...At last, we meet again."

* The beginning of the game is called "Prologue: 1 A boy traveling alone." After pressing X, an introductory sequence begins which explains that the world of Filgaia has become a wasteland and the camera slowly pans through a seemingly neglected village. Since the onset of the wasteland, people band together for survival but there are a few who travel the world seeking adventure who are known as wanderers. One such wanderer is staying at Surf Village and is tending to a horse. Bambollo calls from behind and he turns around. The hailer thanks the wanderer for cleaning his ranch. The default hero's name is Rudy but we changed it to "BUSTER." All capital letters for emphasis. Whatever you name him, Bambollo will say, "That's a good strong name." After working so hard, BUSTER receives 5 Heal Berries as payment.

* The game is viewed from a far-overhead camera that takes in a lot of BUSTER's surroundings when he's roaming the world. The default view is pretty far but to focus in on the action, press up on the R-analog and the camera will tighten up the shot. In the first area, a few chickens stroll around and peck at the ground while Bambollo stands so still in the middle of a field that he might be auditioning for a part as a scarecrow. There's also a horse inside a barn and a big red bird which stands on a post and flaps its wings every once in a while.

* Movement is controlled through the L-analog and pressing TRIANGLE brings up the action menu. To run, hit the X button and BUSTER sprints forward. BUSTER's first task is to visit the village chief

* While en route to the village chief's home, a little kid named Tony standing in front of the house says he would like a Holy Berry which is found in caves. He later rushes off to the Berry caves and the village chief resigns to keeping it a secret since there is a ban on visiting the caves and he doesn't want to panic the villagers.

* Before speaking to the village chief, Tallman, his wife says the following to BUSTER, "It's getting difficult to cultivate wheat, which is how we make our money. The soil is losing its fertility. I read a book that said the reason the land was ruined is that long ago there was a battle with monsters. The book said many scary things. I tried taking the story with a grain of salt, but had to stop reading in the middle of it. If you are intersted, you can read it. It's titled "The World Moves to Wilderness." Look for it in the bookcase upstairs." Tallman tells BUSTER that Surf Village once benefited from herbs that were collected from the Berry Cave which is west of the village. He also tells him that he can get some bombs from his storage room which is what they used to explore Berry Cave.

* To set a bomb, press the SQUARE button and it'll blow up after a few seconds. Like a powered-up Bomberman, up to eight bombs may be laid down at once to set off a powerful blast in order to clear obstacles in a wide area or to destroy big chests.

* To locate the Berry Cave, head west and hit the SQUARE button to reveal it. When BUSTER enters the cave, Campbell is already there and asks BUSTER to find Tony and bring him back. The first encounter is against a pair of GOBs who are shot dead with a bullet each from BUSTER's gun. It's that simple - cock a gun at a GOB and vanquish it with a single shot. Battle are turn based and players select an action icon from a five possible choices. The sword icon is for attacking and BUSTER blasts a cap from his gun when engaging an enemy. Battles are viewed in a 3D rotating arena where attacks from both sides are shown in full motion detail.

* In the cave area beneath the ladder, there's a treasure chest which holds a Gimel coin which will allow the game to be saved to memory card even if there is no Memory Bird in the area.

* As BUSTER levels up, his gunshots will cause more damage. He may also fire off three shots in quick succession when conditions are right for a critical blast. Along with the extra damage, counterattacks are also possible as BUSTER gains experience. Even though BUSTER takes damage during a battle, he will recover all of his lost hit points after the battle is over as long as he has a store of vitality.
